Why Petra ? The name in Greek means 'a massive rock' and in Jordan, there is a very ancient city called Petra which is carved out of solid rock . In the Bible, God is often mentioned as being a 'Rock' denoting strength, security, a hiding place, and also a solid foundation on which to build our hopes. Jesus Christ, God's son also used this expression of himself in Matthew 16:18, where he said that Peter was 'a stone' ( petros ) but that he himself was 'the Rock' ( petra ) upon whom he would build his Church. The twelve apostles he chose were to be stones in the foundation but he himself was to be the Chief Corner Stone, see Ephesians 2: 20 - 22. Now, what has all that to do with our house name ? First of all, the foundations for Petra were literally carved out of a rock face, and the house was built on this rock foundation. The other reason is that as as we look out the windows towards the coast line, we see one massive rock bluff surrounded by many other smaller rocks. We see these representing a picture of 'the church', and sometimes we like to name the smaller ones the twelve apostles. As Christians, we have tried to build our lives and our business upon 'the solid rock', the Lord Jesus Christ. He is in the foundation of all that we endeavor to do for him, both now and for eternity. We hope that as you stay at Petra Apartments you will see for yourselves the meaning of the name, and perhaps want to learn more about the one who is 'the Rock'. |
